How Harbours Changed My Perspective On My Journey

Hi, my name is Beatris Iversen.

I have been to Cape Town many moons ago — or it felt like that — when in fact it was only nine years ago. Two things mattered deeply on that trip: visiting Table Mountain, and the harbour. Table Mountain wasn't possible that day. Too many clouds. Too much in the way. But deep down inside, I think I knew — I left that door open on purpose. Knowing, somehow, that one day I would go back and finish what I had started.

More than nine years passed.

And finally, I got the chance.

This time I had two intentions. One was to visit the V&A Waterfront — and I did. But what happened when I stepped foot on that harbour was something I hadn't expected, and something I will never forget.

When my partner passed away in 2025, I made a promise. I would go back to Cape Town, and I would take his memories with me. I would carry him to the water. Maybe that was the closure I was seeking — and standing there, watching the boats move gently in the harbour, I finally felt it. That he could rest in peace, wherever his beautiful soul is.

As I looked out at the boats, something moved through me. An energetic activation — a recognition — running straight up my spine. And in that moment, standing in the harbour I had dreamed about for nearly a decade, I realised something profound: maybe my original home was never really my home at all.

The peace that came over me was unlike anything I had felt in years.

Two doors that had been left open for a very long time — quietly, patiently waiting — finally closed. And I understood then that some journeys cannot be completed until we are truly ready. That some places hold pieces of us until we come back to collect them.

My love for harbours and mountains didn't start yesterday. It started long before I had the words for it.

You might find my other article on harboursother article on harbours very interesting — because this experience revealed why I have always, intentionally and almost instinctively, sought out harbours on my travels. Why the threshold between land and sea has always felt like home to me, even when I couldn't explain it.

I appreciate your time in my store. I hope this article gives you clarity on something you may have been searching for yourself — for a long time.

May you travel safe, even if you are at home. Knowing that the journey is what makes life special. The journey is what keeps us going, giving meaning to every step, every breath, every door we choose to walk through.

"Moments are like maps — let each second guide you."

Thank you. — Beatris Iversen
